Are you looking for the best way to save your family vacation?  If so, you have the right idea by going with a vacation package, but did you know you can save even more if you know what type of package to look for?  It’s true, while many vacation packages are great, there are some real stinkers out there that might actually wind up costing you more money than if you’d purchased everything separately.

How To Choose The Best Vacation Package?

Choosing the Right Vacation Package to Minimize Costs and Maximize Fun

Another bad scenario is buying a cheap vacation package and then not enjoying the actual vacation.  Both of these scenarios can be avoided by following these simple steps to choosing the right vacation package for your next trip.

  • What is your Vacation’s Purpose?

The purpose of your vacation is very important when choosing a vacation package.  Do you want to see new and exciting cultures, visit historical places, take in scenic and serene environments, hike the rugged outback, go mountain climbing or just sit out by a pool without screaming kids running around?  The purpose of your vacation is going to be the first directional step you take when choosing a package.

For instance, will you be traveling with kids and if so, does the resort have some type of program so you can spend some alone time with your partner?  Are there family theme parks nearby? Beaches?  Can you go sight-seeing if you want to? Will you have to rent a car if you don’t want to?  How about the landmarks?  What do you want in a vacation?  Make sure your package offers it.

  • Are there Excursion Packages and Add-ons?

One of the main thing about vacation packages is that they are fairly bare-bones minimum.  This means you’ll get a flight, a hotel and some other types of things, but what you really want to look for are add-ons.  Add-ons are things like catamaran cruises, zip-lining, tours, bike rentals—basically anything that is going to make your stay at your destination more memorable.

You can look through some of the local travel agencies and tourist destinations in the place you are going if you don’t want to go through your vacation package provider, but the thing is you should definitely have some alternatives to choose from.  You might be able to control the price of your vacation, but you can’t always control the weather.

    • Check out the Local Food and Entertainment.

If you’re a foodie—and many of us are—you really need to check into the types of food offered around your resort or hotel.  Find vacation packages that offer destinations close to foods that you like to eat—or want to try.  Look for authentic restaurants or fancy nightclubs if that’s your thing.  If you like the old stand-by of fast food, look for that.

This is especially important for those with special needs and diets.  Or, on the other hand, you might want to look into vacation packages that offer rooms with kitchens or at least a microwave.  If so, be certain there’s a grocery store around your resort or hotel, or at least easy access to one.

You can also opt for vacation packages where all of your meals and food are included, this way you won’t have to worry about any of this.  Of course, this is more for the people who just view food as a necessary part of daily life, as you might not get the tastiest fare around.

    • Shop Around for Prices by Season.

Finally, you should always realize that vacation packages are going to be cheaper in certain places during certain times of the year and more expensive at other times. You have to understand the peak tourist times, mostly revolving around the weather. For example, you’ll pay a lot more for a Florida vacation during the winter because that’s when people want to escape the cold Northern weather.  On the other hand, if you can brave the hot Florida sun during the summer, you’ll pay almost half-price for just about everything.

The bottom line here is that if you want to get the best deal on a vacation package that you’ll truly enjoy, you have to do your homework.
