What To See in Siena

Siena is the prominently located town in southern Tuscany that sits proudly atop three hills. A beautiful sight, visible from miles around, Siena is one of Tuscany’s four main cities that also include Florence, Pisa and Lucca. Photograph opportunities abound in the city with the grand buildings, elegant monuments and wonderful colours adding to the city’s seemingly natural beauty.

The Piazza del Campo is the main square in the city and is well known as the venue for the annual bareback horse race that is run in Siena. Since the thirteen hundreds, when the Council of Nine were in power, the city has been divided into separate districts. Each district, physically separated, has its own flag, own identity and own Palio rider. The winner of this seemingly crazy horse race, which lasts less than two minutes is revered by the people of the city and the winning horse is always taken to the main cathedral to be blessed.

Siena’s cathedral is special and one of the most beautiful in Tuscany. The Torre del Magia in the main piazza is also worth a visit. You can climb to the top and see the city from a whole new perspective. Inside the tower is the Civic Museum, which has some fine Sienese paintings. There are many aristocratic villas and palaces in the city, many which open their doors to the public and offer a real insight into what life was like during the Renaissance period for the more wealthy people of the city.

When visiting Tuscany villa rental properties are an appealing accommodation choice. Staying in a Tuscan villa adds an authentic and luxurious touch to your Italian dream holiday.
