So, you have recently purchased a brand new pocket bike. You must have loved its style, looks and of course speed. But are you wondering about its maintenance as in why should you do it and how should you do it?
Well, for starters, let’s talk about the history of pocket bikes. Originated as a passion project of a few engineers who used to make miniature bikes, pocket bikes were first made from spare parts. Later on, they started being used in the race track pits due to their small size and speed. To talk about the features of pocket bikes:
1- They aren’t much taller than 50 cm.
2- Depending upon their engines, they reach up to the speed of 35 miles per hour
3- Available in number of different sizes and types such as choppers, sports bike, mini pocket bikes, electric ninja super pocket bike etc.
4- These bikes basically use 2 stroke engines that are much smaller and less powerful than your regular engines.
5- The laws regarding the pocket bikes varies in different countries so you need to check them before riding one. For instance, 50cc super pocket bike that are for kids aged 16 years and above doesn’t require a license to ride in most states of USA.
How to Perform Routine Maintenance
Just like any other vehicle of yours, pocket bikes are also motorized vehicles that will perform better only if you perform regular maintenance on it. To keep your super pocket bike in a good working condition, you need to follow certain steps and do a few things that are explained here, take a look:
Oil and Fuel Mixture – Due to pocket bikes’ favourable power to weight ratio, as mentioned above they use two stroke engines. As these two stroke engines doesn’t require regular oil change, maintenance become a little easier. However, in order to keep your engine well lubricated, change the oil at least once a month and have high quality oil. Also, you can have a mixture of one part oil to 25 parts fuel. But make sure the mixture is perfect or you may experience negative results.
Air Filter Maintenance – Air filter needs to be checked before you change the oil. To keep your engine cool, air must be channeled. But with the presence of dust and grime in air, it needs to be filtered. Located on the front of motor, you can easily access it by removing the protective cover and clean or replace it accordingly.
Spark Plug Maintenance – Every time you change oil, pull the spark plug. It is a crucial part of your bike that ignites the fuel. Make sure the spark plug is always clean and of golden brown color. Watch out for any white discoloration as it means either the fuel is running too hot or it’s incorrect mixture. If the spark plug gets damaged or worn out, replace it.
Carburetor Maintenance – A difficult to maintain but a sophisticated piece of your pocket bike, ensure that you hire the services of a trained professional to repair it. Look for any excess grease or dirt in it and clean whenever needed.
Throttle Maintenance – No matter the type of throttle you have, twist type or hand type, it basically connects to your bike’s engine through a cable. By sending motion through the cable, it allows ignition. So, make sure the cable is whole and clean.
Brakes Maintenance – Brakes are the most crucial part of safety and bike maintenance. Ensure that the brake pads aren’t down to the metal and test them before every ride. Brake maintenance involves checking for a clean and undamaged cable and replacing or adjusting them as necessary.
Chain Maintenance – In order to create the motion, your pocket bike relies on a chain to transmit energy from engine to wheels. So, keep your chain in proper working order by checking its tension, lubricate it before every ride and adjust it whenever necessary.
Tire Maintenance – Before every use check the tire pressure. If the pressure is low, it will make your ride powerless and sluggish. So, check the tire and maintain the average pressure of 85 PSI.
Screws, Nuts and Bolts – Regularly check over the bolts, nuts and screws. In case loose screws become a recurring problem, use loctite blue or you can take them to a local hardware store too.
Battery – Keep your battery charged all time. Although it will self charge while running, if left standing for long periods, it may get discharge.
Bearings – Be sure to check the bearing every now and then. To ensure that the wheels are operating smoothly, spin them and to check for play, turn your handlebars. Tighten or replace the bearings if handles turn too easily.
